First-in-the-nation primary voters have an opportunity to reorient the trajectory of next year’s election to one focused on the seemingly forgotten majority of the American people rather than one catering to partisan extremes.

This year former Trump adviser David Urban joined fellow Republicans in urging Congress to pass the Respect for Marriage Act – and this week, upon the bill’s passage by the U.S. Senate, he noted on CNN the historic nature of the bipartisan victory.

Same-sex marriage supporters say outreach efforts have focused on Republicans who represent swing states and those who have family members who would be affected by the legislation. Former Republican National Committee Chairman Ken Mehlman, who is gay, said he has talked with Republican senators as part of a group called Centerline Action, which is advocating for same-sex marriage protection.

“Over half of all voters in each state believe same-sex marriages should be recognized as valid by the law. Senators in these target states who vote yes on the RMA would see increased support or no negative impact among their voters.”
